Description SEMrush Sensor

SEMrush Sensor is a sensor that allows you to keep an eye on the volatility of search engine results. The tool displays volatility scores for any activity category at any time. Maintaining or improving one’s position in the search results requires total monitoring of the SERPs stakes. This means that you must be able to interpret phenomena or events that may influence the display of search results. It is precisely for this purpose that SEMrush develops a feature called Sensor which informs you of fluctuations in the SERPs at all times. The tool provides you with data on the volatility of its SERPs locally, internationally and by category of activity. Let’s find out in this description the best features of this tool.

What is SEMrush Sensor?

The popular SEO platform SEMrush has a feature called SEMrush Sensor which broadcasts volatility scores every day.  The higher the score, the greater the volatility of Google’s search results.  As we can see on the graph below, for any category, we have a high volatility score of 6.9 for the last 30 days. The Semrush Sensor score is based on a 10-point scale:
  • 0 to 2 is considered weak;
  • 2 to 5 is normal;
  • 5 to 8 is high;
  • 8 to 10 is very high
For example, a Semrush Sensor score between 0 and 4 means it’s an ordinary day with Google’s SERPs.  If a website experiences ranking changes, it is probably because it is updated or the backlink profile changes positively or negatively. If the Semrush sensor score is greater than or equal to 5, the tool detects a significant change in Google’s search results pages.  Ranking positions have changed for many sites in the index and this could be a sign of an algorithm change. When it detects a change, SEMrush shares any publicly known information about the algorithm change. It’s important to keep in mind that Google makes changes to specific elements of its algorithm, as well as general algorithm updates that impact all search results.  SEMrush lets you filter and compare volatility scores by specific topic categories, devices, and countries to identify more accurate Google search algorithm updates.  SEMrush’s sensor also publishes daily changes to specific search engine results page (SERP) features like:
  • Featured snippets;
  • The local package;
  • Shopping results;
  • The knowledge panel or Knowledge Panel;
  • Top stories;
  • Instant responses;
  • The best advertisements;
  • Etc.
The SEMrush Sensor feature gives you the ability to view SERP volatility data for almost every major country in the world. In addition to switching from Google to the Chinese search engine, Baidu, you can also restrict the display of data on mobile devices or computers.

What are the features of SEMrush Sensor?

Let’s discover in this section the most notable features:
  • SERP Volatility
SEMrush uses its Sensor feature to assess the volatility of results in search engines. This is a score out of 10, the higher it is, the more likely it is that there have been changes in the algorithm.   Obviously, the score is starkly different from one topic category to another and you can stay focused only on the topic of your interest to gauge fluctuations in SERPs. When choosing the subject ”Pets and animals”, we can read that the volatility score in this sector is lower than the score for any category.  What you will find is that some niches are more likely to move a lot than others.  For example, a niche like shopping won’t change much because most companies and brands at the top like Aliexpress have a lot of resistance, allowing them to hold their place in the SERPs.  In contrast, in the news niche, there will be constant changes as it is usually based on current events. SEMRush Sensor also displays occurrence of SERP features and HTTPS usage trend. These are all the different features that can show up on search engine results. On top of that, it gives you the number of sites in the top results that use https over http.
  • Deviations
This feature allows you to see, generally, the topic category that deviates the most from the average volatility score it has. Generally, all categories stay consistent until late or early next month when they start to fluctuate a bit.
  • Winners and Losers
This section lets you see all the sites that have implemented rank tracking, those that have risen the most in the rankings due to volatility, and those that have seen the biggest drop. Otherwise, this data comes from domains tracked by the sensor and you can use it to find the domains that are most impacted during a Google algorithm update.
  • Notifications
If you want to receive Sensor notifications without having to visit the Semrush website, you can click on the ”Subscribe to notifications” button at the top of the dashboard to subscribe to these alerts. There are two options for Sensor notifications:
  • Email messages;
  • Browser push notifications.
After choosing your preferred notification method, Semrush will notify you of any significant ranking fluctuations based on sensor data. Generally speaking, if you have a Semrush account, you can check your website’s Semrush Sensor score by clicking on the ‘Personal Score’ tab that appears on the main sensor dashboard.  If you don’t have an account set up yet, you can enter your domain in the tracking field and click the “Try It Out” button to register. The personal scores of the Semrush sensor allow you to calculate the volatility of a set of keywords that you have configured in the ”Position tracking” section.  To get the most accurate data, you need to have a large number of keywords in these campaigns. As you can see, SEMrush Sensor is an impeccable tool when it comes to visualizing data on the fluctuation of SERPs that you can use.
