Description Keyword Explorer

According to Ahrefs, 53.3% of all website traffic comes from organic search. This evokes the need to use high potential keywords for your pages in order to be better referenced in search engines. To better succeed in this step of SEO, you can use the Ahrefs Keyword Explorer feature.  However, this quite powerful feature helps you get useful insights into the keywords you want to rank for. To understand how the Keyword Explorer functionality works, I invite you to read this description carefully.

What is Ahref’s Keyword Explorer ?

Ahrefs Keyword Explorer is specially designed to give insights into the ability and potential of keywords in search. The tool includes various metrics like estimated search volume and a difficulty score, as well as features like keyword lists and the ability to see what the SERPs look like for the keyword over time. Although Ahrefs was originally developed to analyze backlinks, the Keyword Explorer feature is well known and quite effective.  After logging in to the keyword mining module, you need to set your preferences on the platform you want to get information from, write the keyword(s) and choose the country from which you want to access the data.

What metrics to discover in Keyword Explorer?

The keyword research tool allows you to have enough relevant information to help you make a complete analysis:
  • Search volume
Obviously, when we talk about search volume, we refer to the average number of times ‘one keyword is searched per month.  Keyword Explorer gives you the ability to search the same search volume for 10,000 keywords at once.   Search volume is the number of searches, not the number of people who searched. This means that if a person searches multiple times for the same keywords within a month, that number of searches will be included in the search volume. Keyword Explorer lets you filter the search volume for each searched keyword report. On the one hand, this keyword volume filtering allows you to find pages with high search volume keywords, i.e. the most competitive pages. On the other hand, it helps you discover low search volume keywords that you can use to your advantage to acquire additional traffic. Another way to filter search volume for keywords is to switch between countries to see how people in each country might be consuming specific keywords. You can also see global search volumes, that is, the sum of search volumes from all countries.  Also, although Google is the largest search engine in the world, it is not the only one, which means that you can extend your marketing strategy to other engines. With clickstream data, we can estimate search volume in nine other search engines. This means that if you are marketing on YouTube, Amazon, Bing or other search engines, Keyword Explorer is a real source of reliable keyword data that you can trust.
  • The number of clicks
In reality, many people search for something on the internet, but not all of them click through the search results and visit the top-ranking pages. This is usually due to the direct answers to questions that Google provides in search results and snippets. In this case, Internet users do not need to click to find the information they are looking for. This is when you need to use Keyword Explorer click measurement.  The feature tells you the average number of monthly clicks on search results for a keyword. It can therefore be noticed that the search volume can correspond to the number of clicks only in rare cases.
  • The Traffic Potential
If we continue with our ”Healthy Juice” example, we can see that this term has a monthly search volume of 1600 and receives 868 clicks. However, if you rank for that particular keyword, your page will likely rank for similar terms and related synonyms as well. For example, for our search term, we identify the parent topic by taking the #1 ranking page. This keyword is the one that sends the most traffic to the page.
  • The cost per click (CPC)
Generally, the cost per click (CPC) corresponds to the fees that advertisers are willing to pay for each click on an ad from a keyword.  It’s a more important metric for advertisers than SEOs, but it can serve as a useful proxy for a keyword’s value. For example, for the term “office coffee”, the cost per click is relatively high at $12, compared to another common query like “how to make a good espresso”.  This is quite reasonable because people are looking to buy a desktop coffee machine, which can cost a huge amount of money. On the other hand, those who are looking for “how to make a good espresso” simply want to find out, not buy. However, one important thing to know about CPC is that it is much more volatile than search volume.  While search demand for most keywords remains roughly the same from month to month, its CPC can change at any time.
  • Keyword Difficulty
When analyzing keywords for fairly specific targeting, you should consider looking at a keyword’s ranking difficulty.  Typically, one observes the difficulty of a specific keyword from the top-ranking pages for that term. Keyword Explorer helps you determine how difficult it would be to rank in the top 10 search results for a given keyword. It does this by calculating a keyword difficulty score from 1 to 100, with 100 being the most difficult. The Keyword Difficulty Score is based on a weighted average of the number of referring domains in the top 10 search results. In addition, many different factors can judge the difficulty or ease of ranking:
  • Number (and quality) of backlinks;
  • Domain ranking;
  • Length, relevance, freshness of content;
  • Use of the target keyword, synonyms;
  • Research intent;
  • Branding;
  • Etc.
So, one can base the Keyword Difficulty (KD) score on the number of websites that Google returns within 10 ranking ranks. As you can see in the image, each KD score relates to an approximate number of websites that must link to your page for it to reach the top 10 search results. In general, if you want to make your pages more relevant in search engines, Keyword Explorer might be a good option for you.
